For many years, I have called Riga my home, and every December, its cobblestone streets fill me with an unparalleled joy. The city’s historic center, fondly known as the Old Town, transforms into a dreamlike wonderland. Storefronts shimmer with golden lights, the aroma of mulled wine and gingerbread fills the crisp air, and the timeless charm of the streets creates a heartwarming festive atmosphere. Yet amidst all this splendor, there is one place that stands out—a shop whose window displays possess an almost hypnotic allure.

  On December 31, 2024, I finally crossed the threshold of one of these winter décor shops. It was their final day of operation for the year, as the shop opens exclusively during the pre-holiday season, offering patrons a chance to bring home a fragment of this festive magic. Inside, a warm and welcoming salesperson greeted me and eagerly recounted the story of the shop's visionary founder.

  I had already encountered this name before. Just a week earlier, I had attended a Christmas concert at a historic church on the outskirts of Riga. The space had left me spellbound: its timeless architecture harmonized seamlessly with modern, ethereal decorations, creating the sensation of stepping into a fairytale. To my astonishment, I learned that it was Valters Ozoliņš, the owner of the “Ziemas” ("Winter") shop, who designed this stunning transformation.

  From an early age, Valters Ozoliņš displayed a rare talent for finding beauty in the smallest of details and dreamed of sharing this perspective with others. His deep love for his native Latvia influenced every aspect of his work. Blending dreams with a mission to preserve cultural heritage, Valters created a business that has become an integral part of the country’s story.

   The business founded by Valters Ozoliņš is a true family enterprise, with each member contributing their unique talents. Their shops radiate charm, as every detail is imbued with a profound love for art, history, and the natural beauty of Latvia.

   The Ozoliņš family takes pride in reviving Latvian traditions, from architectural elements to floral artistry. Their dedication breathes fresh life into the nation’s cultural heritage, making it more accessible to a modern audience.

   This family’s passion for beauty resonates with me deeply. I adore fresh flowers and elegant candles, and surrounding myself with such treasures fills my heart with joy. This personal connection inspired me to write about Valters and his extraordinary work.

   The décor shops created by Valters are much more than places to purchase goods. Stepping inside feels like entering an enchanted realm: dazzling ornaments, unique bouquets, and exquisite decorations radiate warmth and harmony.

   Beyond his business, Valters Ozoliņš is widely celebrated for his philanthropy. Every Christmas season, he and his family dedicate their time to decorating historic churches near Riga. Towering angels, glowing candles, and intricate garlands transform these sacred spaces into havens of Christmas magic.

   These churches become the focal point of holiday celebrations, drawing visitors who come to bask in the festive atmosphere and enjoy the concerts held within.

“Bringing joy to others is the most meaningful gift we can offer during this time,” says Valters with conviction.

   For Valters, beauty is more than aesthetic; it is a connection to history and culture. His team’s innovative projects merge modern design with Latvia’s rich traditions, preserving and celebrating the country’s heritage.

While Christmas remains the favorite season for the Ozoliņš family, their creations inspire people throughout the year. Whether it’s the freshness of spring, the vibrancy of summer, or the cozy warmth of autumn, each season finds its reflection in their artistry.
