The Image of a Country is Shaped by Its People: Latvia Through Faces and Traditions
The image of a country doesn’t emerge out of nowhere—it is created by its people, through their actions, behavior, and interactions with others. As the people are, so is the country. This statement is especially significant when it comes to tourism. Visitors often perceive a nation through their encounters with its citizens, how they are welcomed, what is shown to them, and how they are spoken to. Latvia is a perfect example of how a country can capture the hearts of tourists through the hospitality and warmth of its people.
The town of Tūja, a Baltic gem bathed by the calm waters of the Baltic Sea, is not only blessed with natural beauty but also with people who know how to present Latvia in the best light. In this regard, I must highlight the family of Andris, Anda, and their daughter Lauma. They have become for us the embodiment of Latvian hospitality, wisdom, and talent.
Our morning at the Baumanis family’s home began with the gentle awakening of the first rays of the sun, which gradually appeared over the garden, filling it with a golden glow. On the table, elegantly set with care and attention to detail, awaited true homemade delicacies: fresh bread, fragrant honey, and aromatic coffee brewed in an Italian coffee machine. All of this created an atmosphere of coziness and harmony, where every sip and every bite felt like a piece of morning happiness.
Anda, a landscape design master, has crafted a true work of art around their home—with each detail in the garden speaking of the harmony between nature and human imagination. Dr. Andris Baumanis, who devotes his heart to medicine, enjoys spending his free time working with his hands, pouring his soul into every corner of their cozy haven. Together, they have turned their home into a paradise where every moment brings peace, beauty, and inspiration.
Andris and Anda are representatives of an old Latvian lineage, preserving and passing down their country’s traditions from generation to generation. Their home in Tūja is a true treasure trove of Latvian culture, where every corner breathes history and love for their homeland. With them, we had the pleasure of enjoying national dishes prepared according to ancient recipes. There’s an indescribable delight in savoring traditional black bread, smoked delicacies, and fresh berries during cozy garden dinners under the whisper of the sea and the chirping of crickets. Each dish tells its own story and becomes part of our shared experience.
Latvian cuisine is a true reflection of the history, culture, and traditions of this charming Baltic region. Every dish here has its own history, and every product carries the unique taste of Latvia. Among the wide variety of national dishes, Latvian cheeses hold a special place, not just as a food product but as a true symbol of national pride.
Latvian dishes reflect simplicity and at the same time, sophistication, which is characteristic of this country. In the tradition of treating guests, warmth and hospitality play a crucial role, accompanying every meal. Latvians love to gather around the table with their entire family, and food becomes more than just sustenance—it becomes a true ritual filled with respect for the ingredients and those who prepared them.
Latvian national dishes are often made from locally sourced ingredients, grown and produced within the country. This ensures the freshness and natural quality of the food, enhancing its taste and health benefits. Special attention is given to the seasonality of ingredients, allowing each dish to fully reveal its flavor potential.
The hospitality of Andris and Anda truly impressed us. A wonderful example of this was our friends Andris and Anda, who not only introduced us to national traditions but also invited us to a genuine Latvian barbecue. Their home, located on the shores of the Baltic Sea, became a place where we felt the warmth and hospitality of Latvia.
Freshly grilled meat, vegetables from their own garden, traditional Latvian cheeses—everything created a unique atmosphere where each bite was filled with love and care. And what a pleasure it was to engage in pleasant conversation at the table! Andris and Anda know how to maintain a conversation, creating an atmosphere of ease and relaxation that makes any meal a true delight. The family even has a greenhouse where they grow vegetables themselves. A collection of tomato varieties and juicy cucumbers were the star of the table.
Among the unique products of Latvian cuisine, cheeses hold a special place. Latvian cheese is not just a dairy product; it is a work of art that combines tradition and modernity. Each type of cheese has its own distinctive flavor and is made according to special recipes passed down through generations.
One of the most famous Latvian cheeses is "Jāņu siers," traditionally made for the Līgo festival, celebrated on the night of the summer solstice. This cheese is made from fresh cow’s milk, with the addition of eggs and caraway seeds. It has a delicate taste and a pleasant aroma of spices, making it an essential part of the festive table.
Another popular Latvian cheese is "Skābais siers," or sour cheese. It has a slight tang and a unique flavor achieved through the fermentation process. This cheese is known for its versatility: it can be eaten on its own or used in the preparation of various dishes, from salads to desserts. The table was always adorned with cheeses and honey, salads, and smoked foods.
Tasting national dishes in Latvia is more than just food. It’s an opportunity to feel the warmth and friendliness of Latvians, their love for nature, and respect for traditions. In every slice of Latvian cheese, in every spoonful of soup or salad, there is a piece of this beautiful country, its history, and its culture.
Visitors to Latvia who have the opportunity to taste national dishes, including cheeses, are always delighted by the richness of flavors and aromas. Latvian cuisine is a true journey into the world of natural, simple, and at the same time perfect products, lovingly prepared for guests of this Baltic country. And personal encounters with people like Andris and Anda make this acquaintance unforgettable.
As we walked with the Baumanis family along the Baltic Sea coast, we discovered a deeper meaning to this country. The Baltic Sea enchants with its tranquility and peace. Its waves, gently lapping the shore, create an atmosphere of serenity and harmony. The sea breeze brings with it the scent of pine from the nearby forests, and the horizon, blending seamlessly with the sky, inspires reflection and dreams.
The sea is not just a part of the Latvian landscape; it is an important element of its people's lives. It symbolizes Latvia itself—reserved and mysterious, yet welcoming and open to the world. Our walks along the coast with Andris, Anda, and Lauma were filled not only with the beauty of nature but also with interesting conversations about life, culture, and the history of this land.
Latvia is a country shaped by its people through their actions and daily care. The Baumanis couple showed us that Latvia is not only about stunning landscapes and rich history, but also about sincere, wise, and talented people who love their land, care for it, preserve and enrich their culture, and pass it on to future generations. They give us the opportunity to discover the true face of this wonderful country. The image of a country is shaped by its people.
